Boston Fishing

Boston is an old fishing town, in fact it is one of the oldest in the Northeast. Fishing in Boston is and has been some of the best fishing in the area of Northeastern America at, in or near the Massachusetts Bay. The Boston Harbor is close to town so it is only a short boat trip, which will leave more time to fish and even though it is so close it still has plenty of fish liked Striped Bass, or as they are known as stripers and Flounder.

Stellwagen Bank is farther away from town, approximately 30 miles or so offshore. This is where the Bluefin Tuna, both regular and giant, migrate in large numbers. Along with the Tuna this place has plenty of pelagic fish like sharks. If you are lucky you might even see a dolphin or whale.

There are also ocean ledges that are not as busy as the fishing is at the Stellwagen Bank. These are located between Cape Cod and Boston Harbor. There are many different species of shark. Along with the sharks you can reel in Haddock, Pollack and Flounder too. Jeffrys Ledge is another great spot for large Mako Shark as well as other ocean fish.

Captain Rob is knowledgeable with all of these spots and more. There are areas for all ages and all experience levels. Boston Fishing is great!!

Boston Fishing Seasons

Striped Bass

Haddock In the winter months the waters are starting to get icy cold but there are still plenty of fish to catch. There are Winter Flounder in the bay and large Haddock offshore.  You might also catch some Pollack, Haddock and Atlantic Cod.

Springtime is the official start of most peoples Boston fishing season. This is when the fish start coming back. Fishing for Striped Bass(Stripers), Bluefish and Pollack, Fluke, known as Summer Flounder, Haddock, and Atlantic Cod is great this time of year.

The Summer is when the season really kicks into gear and is the best time for fishing in Boston. The bay is full of trophy Striped Bass and Bluefish and offshore the Tuna have come back and are biting hard. Summer is a great time for sharks with Mako and Blues in great numbers and you might even see a Great White. It is also a great time for all of the other fish in the bay and offshore.

In the early Fall every fish is in season and waiting to be reeled in. Hardest thing you have to do is decide which type of fish you want to catch. Schools of Tuna, large-sized Stripers, Bluefish, Summer and even some Winter Flounder, Atlantic Cod, Haddock and all species of pelagic sharks and more. Towards the end of the Fall all of the big trophy fish are all but gone but there is still great fishing for Cod, Flounder, Haddock and Pollack. Added bonus all of these species are great eating fish.

The waters in around Boston are teeming with fish. Inshore you can target the most sought after fish in Boston, the Striped Bass or Striper as it is called by the locals and the fun to catch Bluefish or the two types of flounder found in the bay, Winter Flounder and Fluke, known as Summer Flounder. Whether you book a half day, ¾ day or full day charter on the C.J. Victoria, Captain Rob will get to where the fish are and shows you how to land the big ones. He knows all the methods to catch each fish, where they are during the seasons and what they are biting on.

Flounder Fishing

There are two types of flounder found in and around the Massachusetts Bay, Winter Flounder and Summer Flounder. Winter Flounder despite its name can be found in the bay throughout the year but the best time for fishing them is late spring and early fall. Summer Flounder is better known as Fluke. This fish is only found in the bay for a short while during the months of June to August. Both fish are flatfish and are ambush fish, meaning they sit on the bottom and wait for bait to come by them and then they strike. Flounder are usually found in the shallows, around rock formations, ledges and drop-offs. To catch them we use rod and reel with a short jig and either live or dead bait. Because of the way they feed it is sometimes hard to tell that you have a Flounder on your line. It actually follows the leader so the line is slack. Flounder are a wonderful delicate eating fish. On each charter each member of the party is allowed to keep 8 Flounder of 12”or larger.

Cod & Haddock Fishing

To catch this extremely popular fish we offer full day charters to the Stellwagen Bank area. Typically the best time to go fishing for Atlantic Cod is in the late spring early summer but Cod is fished year round just in different areas depending on the time of season. Our boat is equipped with the latest fish finding technology to find these bottom feeders. Cod normally lay on the bottom or in or around rock formations making them hard to notice on radar, but Captain Rob has the experience to be able to look at the view finder and know where the best places to place your hooks will be. One of the most effective ways to hook the fish is by using jigs. Jigging makes it look like there is an injured fish and most fish cannot resist an easy meal. Do to government regulations Cod fishing is Closed.
